AI search visibility is how often assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Bing Copilot and Google AI Overviews name or cite your business when people ask for local recommendations. They draw on the same sources as local search: your website, Google Business Profile, reviews and directory listings. Clear, consistent facts across all of them are what earn the mention.

A growing share of local research now happens inside an AI assistant. The user asks for a good electrician nearby and gets a short list with reasoning, not ten blue links. Being absent from that list is a new kind of invisibility, and it is not fixed by the same tactics as classic rankings.

AI answers compress the results page

A traditional results page shows ten options and lets the user choose. An assistant usually names two or three and explains why. The long tail of positions four to ten effectively disappears. Google’s own AI Overviews increasingly sit above or beside the Map Pack for service questions, so the same squeeze happens inside Google.

That raises the stakes on being clearly, unambiguously described as what you are, where you are, and who you serve.

Entities matter more than keywords

Assistants reason over entities: a business, its location, its services, the areas it covers, its relationships to other things. They are not counting keyword density. If your site never states plainly what you do and where, there is nothing solid to reason about.

Structured data helps here, because it states those facts in a machine-readable form rather than leaving them to be inferred from marketing copy. LocalBusiness schema (or the right subtype, such as Dentist or Electrician) with areaServed, openingHoursSpecification and sameAs links to your profiles is the baseline. I set this up as part of technical SEO.

Get cited, not just crawled

Assistants tend to cite sources that answer a question directly and completely. Pages that bury the answer under three paragraphs of preamble get skipped in favour of ones that lead with it.

Write the answer first, then the supporting detail. It suits human readers too.

  • State the answer in the first sentence of a section
  • Use headings that match real questions
  • Keep facts consistent across your site, profile and listings

This does not replace Local SEO

Assistants draw heavily on the same underlying signals: your profile, your reviews, your citations, your site. A business invisible in Maps is usually invisible to the assistant too.

GEO is a layer on top of solid fundamentals, not a substitute. My generative engine optimization service assumes the Local SEO groundwork is in place, or fixes it first.

Where do AI assistants get local information?

They are not inventing recommendations. They draw on indexed web content, mapping data, review platforms and licensed sources. A business with a thin site, few reviews and inconsistent listings simply provides less material to draw on.

This is why GEO is not a separate discipline bolted onto SEO. The inputs overlap almost entirely; the presentation layer is what changed. A complete Google Business Profile is still one of the strongest inputs, so start with my GBP optimization checklist if yours is half-finished.

Answer one question completely

Assistants favour sources that resolve a question without needing three more pages. A page covering one topic thoroughly outperforms five pages each covering a fragment of it.

This runs against the old habit of splitting content into thin keyword-targeted pages. That tactic was already declining in classic search; in AI answers it fails outright.

  • One page per genuine question, not per keyword variation
  • Lead each section with the answer, then the detail
  • Include the specifics assistants need: areas served, hours, prices where fixed, what you actually do

In Bangladesh, remember that people ask in English, Bangla and romanised Bangla. A page that names areas the way locals do (Bashundhara R/A, Old Dhaka) gives assistants a clearer match.

Consistency across every surface

If your site says you serve five districts, your profile says three, and a directory says something else, an assistant has no reliable fact to state. It will usually name a competitor whose information agrees with itself.

This is the least glamorous work in AI visibility and the most commonly skipped. The method is the same one in my NAP consistency and citations guide.

How to check whether it is working

Ask the assistants directly. Pose the questions a customer would ask about your service and area in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot, then note whether you appear, which competitors do, and what the answer says about you.

Do it monthly and record the results. Reliable rank tracking for AI answers is still immature, so a manual log is genuinely the most honest measurement available.

AI visibility rewards clarity: say plainly what you do, where you do it, and back it with consistent signals everywhere else. For how this fits the wider picture, see the Local SEO in Bangladesh guide. Book a call if you want your current AI visibility checked.

Frequently Asked Questions

AI Search Visibility: Getting Your Local Business Cited by ChatGPT and Gemini: FAQs

How do I get my business recommended by ChatGPT?

Give it consistent, citable facts to work with. Keep your name, address, phone, services and areas identical across your website, Google Business Profile and major directories, earn genuine reviews, and publish pages that answer customer questions directly. There is no submission form or paid placement.

Is GEO different from SEO?

Generative engine optimization (GEO) focuses on being named and cited in AI answers rather than ranked in a list of links. The inputs overlap heavily with SEO: crawlable pages, clear entities, reviews and trusted mentions. GEO mostly changes how you structure and present information.

Do Google AI Overviews show local businesses?

Yes. For many local and service questions, AI Overviews summarise options and often sit alongside the Map Pack, which draws on Google Business Profile data. A strong profile and a website that answers questions clearly give you the best chance of appearing in both.

Does schema markup help with AI search?

It helps by stating your business facts in a machine-readable form. LocalBusiness schema with name, address, areaServed, opening hours and sameAs links removes guesswork. It will not rescue thin content or inconsistent listings, but it supports clear ones.

How can I check if AI assistants mention my business?

Ask them. Put the questions a customer would ask, such as "best AC repair service in Uttara", to ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot, and log whether you appear, who does, and what is said. Repeat monthly, because answers change.
