How Google Maps ranking works

What Google looks at before showing your profile

Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence, and that you cannot pay for a better local ranking. Optimization works on relevance and prominence; distance is fixed by where you are.

  1. Relevance

How well the profile matches the search. Driven by categories, services, products, the description and the website it links to.

  2. Distance

How close you are to the searcher or the area they typed. Nobody can change this, which is why a precise pin and an honest service area matter.

  3. Prominence

How well known and trusted you are. Reviews and ratings, links, articles and directory listings all feed it.

Beyond the profile

The signals around your profile that move Maps rankings

A perfect profile alone rarely wins a competitive area. These are the off-profile layers included in Growth and Multi-Location, and they are the core of my Local SEO service.

  • 01

    Geo-grid rank tracking

Profile problems I fix

Suspended, unverified, duplicated or hijacked? These get fixed first

Optimizing a profile that has one of these problems is wasted effort, so they are always handled before anything else. If you can't find your business on Maps at all, start with why a business is not showing on Google Maps.

  • Suspension & reinstatement

The cause found (usually a keyword-stuffed name, a virtual office or a wrong service-area setup), corrected, and the appeal filed with the evidence Google asks for. Nobody can guarantee reinstatement.

  • Verification, including video

I write the shot list for Google's live video verification: continuous, unedited, showing your signage or location and proof you run the business. You or your staff record it.

  • Duplicate listings

Second and third listings for the same business claimed, merged or removed, so reviews and signals stop being split.

  • Unwanted suggested edits

Changes Google or the public made to your hours, category or pin found, corrected and monitored.

  • Service-area setup

Address hidden if customers don't visit you, and service areas set to where you really work, up to Google's limit of 20.

  • Wrong pin or category

The two quickest wins. A pin on the wrong side of the road or a vague category can hide an otherwise good profile.

What I will and won't do

Guideline-safe GBP optimization vs the shortcuts

Shortcuts sold as Maps ranking hacks tend to work for a while and then get profiles suspended. The guidelines are in Google's Business Profile rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

Google Business Profile Optimization: Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Google Business Profile optimization cost?

The Essential package is $299, one-time, for one location. Ongoing and multi-location work is scoped on a call, because competition and the number of locations decide the work.

Is GBP optimization a one-time job or ongoing?

Both exist. The setup is a one-time job. Holding and growing Map Pack positions needs ongoing reviews, photos, posts and tracking, which is what the Growth package covers.

How long does it take to rank higher on Google Maps?

The profile is usually fully optimized within one to two weeks. Ranking movement depends on competition: quick when a wrong category or pin was the problem, typically a few months in competitive areas.

Can you guarantee a Top 3 Map Pack ranking?

No. Google says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking, and distance from the searcher is outside anyone's control. What you get is the work, done properly, and honest reporting.

How do I verify my Google Business Profile?

Google chooses the method, and today it is often a live video verification: one continuous, unedited clip showing your signage or location, your tools or stock, and proof you manage the business. I write the shot list; you or your staff record it.

Should I add keywords or my city to my business name?

No. The name must match your real-world signage. Keyword-stuffed names are one of the most common reasons profiles get suspended.

Which category should I choose?

The primary category should describe your main service as specifically as possible; it carries the most weight. A dental practice picks Dentist or Dental clinic, not Medical clinic. Additional categories cover other services you genuinely offer, such as Emergency dental service.

Do geo-tagged photos help rankings?

No. Google strips location data from uploaded photos. What helps is real, recent photos of your premises, team and work.

How do I get more Google reviews without breaking the rules?

Ask every real customer with a direct review link, at the moment the job is done, and reply to every review. Never pay, offer discounts for reviews, or only ask happy customers.

My profile is suspended. Can you help get it reinstated?

Yes. The cause is identified and fixed, then the appeal is filed with the evidence Google asks for. Reinstatement depends on Google's review, so it cannot be guaranteed.

I don't have a shop. Should I hide my address?

If customers don't visit you, yes: set up as a service-area business, hide the address and list the areas you really serve.

What happened to Q&A on Google Business Profile?

Google retired public Q&A in late 2025. Questions are now answered from your profile details, reviews and website, so complete fields and a good website matter more.

Does GBP optimization help with AI Overviews and ChatGPT?

It helps. AI Overviews and assistants such as Gemini and ChatGPT pull local facts from business profiles, reviews and directories, so a complete, consistent profile is easier to cite. The wider work is generative engine optimization.

What's the difference between GBP optimization and Local SEO?

GBP optimization works on the profile itself. Local SEO also covers the website, citations, links and content that make the profile rank in competitive areas.
