An independent SEO specialist usually suits a local service business that needs Google Maps and search to make the phone ring: you work directly with the person doing the work, and they focus on one discipline. An agency suits businesses needing several marketing channels at once, many locations, or guaranteed cover when one person is away.
This comparison is usually written by one side to attack the other. I run as an independent specialist, so read this knowing that, and note where I say an agency is the better choice, because sometimes it plainly is.
Specialist vs agency at a glance
| Independent specialist | SEO agency | |
|---|---|---|
| Who does the work | The person you hired | Often a team member assigned after the sale |
| Focus | One discipline, such as Local SEO | Several services under one roof |
| Communication | Direct | Usually through an account manager |
| Cover for leave or illness | Limited | Built in |
| Best fit | Local service businesses, one or a few areas | Multi-channel or multi-location operations |
Where an agency genuinely wins
If you need SEO, Google Ads, social media, design and content produced simultaneously, an agency coordinates that under one roof. Managing five freelancers yourself is a job.
Agencies also survive holidays and illness. One person cannot. If your business would be damaged by two weeks of no activity, that is a real risk to weigh.
- Multiple channels needed at once
- Large or multi-location operations
- Internal teams needing formal reporting structures
- Continuity matters more than specialisation
Where a specialist wins
You talk to the person doing the work. Nothing is translated through an account manager into a brief for a junior executor, and nothing is lost in that translation.
The other advantage is focus. Someone who only does Local SEO (Google Business Profile, Map Pack rankings, service-area pages, reviews, citations) sees the same failure patterns repeatedly across accounts. That pattern recognition is difficult to buy from a generalist team spread across six disciplines. If you want to see what that daily work involves, read what an SEO specialist actually does.
The junior-executor problem
This is the specific risk with agencies, and it is worth naming plainly. The person who sells you the work is frequently not the person who does it. You are impressed in the meeting, then the account is handed to whoever has capacity.
It is not always the case, and good agencies avoid it. But it is worth asking directly: who will actually be working on my account, and how many other accounts do they hold?
Is a specialist cheaper than an agency?
Specialists are often assumed to be cheaper. Sometimes true, sometimes not. An experienced independent may charge more per hour than an agency junior, and be better value because fewer hours are wasted.
Compare what is actually delivered per month rather than headline rates. Ask both what specifically happens in month one. My honest breakdown of SEO cost in Bangladesh covers what moves the price.
Questions that work on both
The same questions expose weak providers regardless of structure. Who does the work. What gets measured. What happens if I leave in ninety days. Who owns the accounts. Show me a result with the source visible, like the ones on my case studies page.
A strong answer to all five matters more than whether the answer comes from one person or twelve. The full checklist is in how to choose an SEO specialist in Bangladesh.
Choose the structure that matches the problem. Multi-channel and multi-location, an agency probably fits. Local service business that needs the phone to ring, a specialist usually goes deeper for less. If that is you, read how I work, see what my Local SEO service covers, or book a strategy call.
